Obituary of Franklin Donald Baughn

Franklin Donald Baughn Sr., 82, formerly of Fredonia, Kan., died Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Infinity Hospice Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Born May 19, 1933, Frank was the son of Charles and Mary Pfiefer Baughn in Vilas, Kan. He grew up in the surrounding rural area farming with his family for many years. In 1952 Frank met his future bride, Charlene Yvonne Wright. He joined the US Army in 1953 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict, returning to Fredonia in 1955 to get married and begin his civilian life. To this union a son and three daughters were born. Frank and Charlene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past year.

The couple moved to Chanute, Kan., shortly after they were married where Frank worked many years at Hembree Tire. Frank also worked for the Chanute refinery prior to moving to rural Fredonia in 1976 where the Baughn family lived for 37 years. During those years, Frank was employed with Berwin Railways as a lead welder and mechanic until his retirement in 1986. In 2013, Frank and Charlene moved to Henderson, Nev., to be near their children.

One of his many passions, Frank very much enjoyed farming and often assisted his neighboring farmers, in addition to his own “little acreage,” He also enjoyed wood working and being part of the Wilson County Old Iron Club and the Fredonia Senior Citizens association. When his children were young, Frank was very active coaching little league baseball and softball, and was a Cub and Webelos Scout Master. Frank was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Franklin Donald Baughn Jr., and René; daughters Yvonna and Kenneth Weiland, Sheryald Curbey and Siva Chelliah, and Fay and Steve Wachholtz; nephew Jerry and Judy Hallbauer, all of Henderson/Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers: Chet Baughn, Sidney, Neb., and Richard Baughn, Wichita, Kan.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members.

Preceding him in death are his parents; two brothers: Tom Baughn and Charles Baughn; and three sisters: Bertie Petty, Louise Shultz and Bonnie Durham.

Funeral service will be held 10:40 am Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Boulder City, Nev., Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. Family visitation is 5-7 pm Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Palm Mortuary, Henderson, Nev.
