Obituary of Charles J. Baughn

Charles J. Baughn, 80, of Chanute, Kansas, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kansas.

He was born April 5, 1924, at Benedict, Kansas, the son of Charles R. and Mary L. (Pfeiffer) Baughn.

He entered the U.S. Army June 17, 1943, serving during World War II. He re-entered the service Oct. 1, 1950, during the Korean War, and was discharged June 7, 1952.

He married Hazel M. Laver on Aug. 12, 1946, at Fredonia, Kansas. She preceded him in death in 1968.

He married LaVeta C. Brooks on June 28, 1975 at Fredonia, Kansas. She survives.

He worked at Ash Grove Cement Co. in Chanute for 41 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of Pacific Lodge #29, AF & AM of Humboldt, KS, and Cecil J. Meeker Post #1654, VFW, Chanute, KS.

He enjoyed camping and trout fishing.

Other survivors include three sons, Don Baughn, of Chanute, KS, J.D. Baughn, of Humboldt, KS, and Darrell Baughn, of Iola, KS; three brothers, Chet Baughn, of Grove, OK, Frank Baughn of Altoona, KS, and Richard Baughn, of Wichita, KS; one sister, Bonnie Durham, of Mt. Pleasant, UT; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Baughn; two sisters, Louise Shultz and Bertie Petty; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Mortuary, Chanute, KS, led by the Rev. Elmer Hemphill Sr. Burial will be in Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery, W. 21st St., Chanute, Kansas.

Cecil J. Meeker Post #1654, VFW, will conduct military honors and Masonic Rites will be conducted by Cedar Lodge #103, both of Chanute.
